Business Resources
The Canadian Arthritis Network (CAN) offers a wide range
of resources to entrepreneurs, innovators, decision makes, pharmaceutical and
biotechnology companies as well as
opportunities for partnerships in
research and knowledge transfer.
Consulting and Laboratory Services
The Network's nearly 200 investigators are world-leading Canadian
scientists with a wide range of skills and expertise in
genetics and genomics, proteomics, inflammation, cellular
and molecular biology of joint tissues, bioengineering for
joint reconstruction, diagnostics and therapeutics, and
methodologies and outcomes research. They offer consulting
and product development services in the following areas:
• access to tissues and body
fluids
• biomarkers
• biostatistics and bioinformatics
• cartilage and bone development
• epidemiology
• histology
• imaging techniques
• in vitro models of arthritis
• in vivo models of arthritis
• knock-out and transgenic
animals
• mechanical loading and
testing
• microarrays
• pathology
• pharmacology/pharmacokinetics
• proteomics
If you are interested in consulting or services in these
or related areas, please contact
Johnathan Riley at 416-586-3167.
Pre-clinical models of osteoarthritis
The pre-clinical resources program facilitates the translation
of pre-clinical science to clinical
science for industry. The Network's
highly qualified experts can develop
and implement protocols to evaluate
drugs for clinical use or evaluate
the mechanisms of action for drug
candidates.
The Network
offers in vivo diagnostics and screening
systems for:
• biomarkers;
• prognostic and predictive
indicators;
• imaging; and,
• in vitro screening.
In addition, the Network offers analytical services and
expert consultants in protocol design, method evaluation,
and review and analysis of data. New technologies are currently
being developed to monitor disease activity and joint damage
in vivo.

Canadian Rheumatology Research Consortium
The Canadian Rheumatology Research Consortium (CRRC), established
with the support of the Network to conduct clinical trials
in new therapies for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, lupus and psoriatic arthritis, is the first
national clinical trials research program of its kind in
arthritis. It completes the continuum of services offered
by the Network from bench to bedside to the community. The
CRRC conducts clinical trials; offers centralized site selection
and budget negotiation; and consulting in clinical development,
particularly in trial design and evaluation. For more information
