Stephen Stimpson, PhD

Dr. Stimpson received his PhD in Anaerobic Microbiology in 1982 from the Anaerobe Laboratory at Virginia Tech, studying anti-tumor activities of anaerobic coryneforms. As a postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina, he studied the pathophysiology of chronic arthritis and fibrosis induced by purified peptidoglycan-polysaccharide and lipolysacharide bacterial cell-wall components.

Joining Glaxo in 1988 (which later became Glaxo Wellcome), he developed models of relapsing arthritis suitable for evaluation of mechanisms and anti-arthitic properties of novel drugs, and led drug discovery projects in trypsin-like protease inhibitors, phosphodiesterase inhibitors and p38 kinase inhibitors.

Prior to Glaxo Wellcome's merger with SmithKline Beecham, Dr. Stimpson served as Exploratory Discovery Head for Musculoskeletal Diseases, responsible for osteoporosis and osteoarthritis projects. Dr. Stimpson is currently the director of the Department of Molecular Pharmacology at GlaxoSmithKline in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, with focus in Metabolic Diseases and Diseases of Agining, with several programs targetting inflammation-like pathways in these diseases.

Dr. Stimpson has been an active participant in Canadian Arthritis Network activities since its beginning, contributing in strategy sessions and grant reviews, and is excited to continue contributing to CAN as the Chair of the Scientific and Medical Advisory Council. He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina, and servers on the Board of the Inflammation Research Association as past-President.

Areas of expertise:
1. Inflammatory Joint Disease
2. Cellular and Molecular Biology of Joint Tissues
