Ivan Otterness, PhD

Dr. Ivan Otterness is a former Research Advisor for Pfizer Inc. Dr. Otterness received a M.Sc. in physical chemistry and a PhD in biophysics from the University of Southern California – Los Angeles. He followed this with postdoctoral work in immunochemistry with Dr. Fred Karush at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Otterness joined the Inflammation Biology group of Pfizer Central Research in 1971, working on the discovery of new drugs for arthritis. He was successively a Research Scientist, Project Leader, Principal Research Investigator and Research Advisor. Dr. Otterness retired from Pfizer in 2000, after twenty-nine years.

Since then, Dr. Otterness has been visiting professor in the Department of Pharmacology, University of Erlangen, Germany and in the Arthritis Division, TNO Prevention and Health in Leiden, The Netherlands. He is a consultant for the pharmaceutical industry and for biotech companies. He received the Distinguished Scientific Mentor Prize from the International Association of Inflammation Societies (IAIS) in 2003.
