Flora Dell, CM
Flora Dell holds a master's certification
in second language teaching from Université Laval and is
certified in Gerontology by the University of St. Thomas.
She served with the departments of education in Nova Scotia
and New Brunswick as a specialist in second language
teaching. She developed and introduced courses in French as
a second language in the school system and a pre-school
program in both provinces.
Ms. Dell joined the New Brunswick government as a consultant
for special populations from 1979 to 1994, collaborating
with the federal Department of Health on working committees
relating to special populations. She was involved with the
effective merger and policy development of three national
organizations evolving as the Active Living Coalition of
Older Adults (ALCOA).
Ms. Dell fostered the development of ALCOA and served as
vice-chair and on the executive. She is the past chair of
the Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis
Knowledge Exchange Task Force and sat on the executive of
the Canadian Centre of Activity and Aging at the University
of Western Ontario. She is a founding member of Osteoporosis
New Brunswick.
Working with special groups and assisting them to become
strong, effective and functional is Ms. Dell’s passion. This
work led to her serving as executive member for
organizations including Osteoporosis Canada’s National
Board, the Frosst Healthcare Foundation, and the President’s
Committee on Gerontology at St. Thomas University.
Ms. Dell is also the first woman to serve as councillor for
the town of Riverview, New Brunswick. She has received the
Order of Canada, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal, the Laval
University Centennial Award, the Osteoporosis Canada Builder
Award and the Frosst Healthcare Foundation Citation Award. Close
