Robin Armstrong PhD, DSc, FRSC
Dr. Armstrong is the present Chair of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Arthritis Network. He received his MSc and PhD degrees from the University of Toronto and did postdoctoral studies at Oxford University. He served as Chair of the Department of Physics at the University of Toronto (1974-1982), Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto (1982-1990), and President of the University of New Brunswick (1990-1996). He is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Armstrong’s research interests involve the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for both medical and condensed matter applications. In the 1980s, he collaborated to establish a small animal MRI laboratory at the Toronto Western Hospital. In the 1990s he established an MRI laboratory at the University of New Brunswick, exclusively for the study of materials.
Dr. Armstrong has served on numerous federal and provincial research committees, including the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC); he was Vice-President of the NSERC Council from 1994-97. Over his career he has received recognition for his research achievements, including his appointment as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (1979), the Herzberg Medal (1973), and the Medal of Achievement (1990) of the Canadian Association of Physicists, and an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of New Brunswick (2001).
